Verified Fishing The backend for fishing
The backend every fishing product runs on

Anyone can
claim a fish.
We prove it.

Every fish gets measured off the board, checked against every fish we have ever seen, and signed off — before anybody’s leaderboard moves.

01 — the problem

A $55 billion industry, running on the honor system.

Every dot is a catch claimed today. One of them was actually checked. Weigh-ins kill fish and burn hours; photos prove nothing; leaderboards pay out on stories. That single magenta dot is the entire category we built.

02 — how the decision is made

Every signal votes. Nothing gates.

Nothing is checked in order, and nothing has to pass before the next thing runs. The photos, the board, the water, the fisherman’s history and a captain’s eyes are all weighed together into one call — and any one of them can be weak, or missing altogether, without holding up the rest.

What gets checked on every fish

A fish is ten claims, not one.

species .95 length .92 location .96 time .94 identity .93 event .96 release .88 weight .70 coherence .91 population .72

— — — magenta ring is the verification threshold. You see which part of a catch is shaky — here the weight, and whether the fish has been seen before — instead of one number that tells you nothing.

What counts for how much

Published weights. No mystery number.

SPECIESLENGTHLOCATION TIMEIDENTITYCATCH EVENT RELEASEWEIGHT 0.200.150.15 0.100.100.10 0.100.10

Published, and they add up to one. A missing piece counts as neutral rather than zero, so a catch with a bad photo still gets a fair call instead of an automatic no.

03 — how they send it in

Let them send it in however they fish. Grade it honestly.

Some fishermen film every second. Some send a photo from the camera roll three hours later. Take both — just never pretend they are worth the same.

never counts for a prize

Offline-first

No signal on the water is normal. Catches sit sealed on the phone and go up when the truck hits pavement, with the original times intact.

Live sessions

Everyone on the water sees the same thing at once — who is out, where the boats are, and a catch the second it lands.

Clip & broadcast

Fishermen cut their own highlights while the original stays sealed. Verified catches turn into clips worth posting.

04 — how we know

A fish leaves more evidence than a fisherman does.

How long a fisherman waits HOOKSET ON THE BOARD SENT GRADED Seconds. NOT A WEIGH-IN LINE. NOT A COMMITTEE. NOT NEXT TUESDAY. ANYTHING CLOSE IS IN FRONT OF A CAPTAIN THE SAME DAY

The fish is graded before the boat is back at the ramp, and it swims away in the meantime. No livewell, no scale queue, no hauling a dying fish to a stage so somebody can believe you.

What one photo of a fish tells us 54.6 cm ±1.8 girth 31.2 cm SURFACE742 cm² K-FACTOR1.42 EST. WEIGHT2,180 g ±240 g · 95% CI

Nose to tail off the board. Girth across the shoulders. Weight worked out from the shape of the fish and what that species runs — given as a range, never a number nobody can argue with.

same fish, caught twice

Every fish is one fish

Markings, spots and shape work like a fingerprint. The same trout caught by three different fishermen comes back as the same trout — not just "a trout".

3 CATCHES → WE KNOW THE SPECIES

New water, new species

Running a derby on a species we have never seen? Three confirmed catches and we can call it on sight. Nobody waits on us to catch up.

REPEAT

Cheats surface early

Every catch is checked against every fish that fisherman has sent before, and against the same water and species. Recycled fish and borrowed photos come back flagged — before the cheque is written.

Enforced in the data layer
Not discoverable
Kids never come back in a search or a suggested-friends list. That is enforced where the data itself lives, so no app update can accidentally undo it.
No referral economy
A minor can neither trigger nor collect an invite reward. The loop refuses to run.
No ad rewards
A minor cannot be paid to watch an advert. The system refuses before anything is credited.
What they do get
Free forever
No season pass, no membership, no paywall between a kid and a leaderboard.

Youth divisions, school leagues, sponsored kids’ derbies — same checks, same fairness as everybody else.

A community that pays rent

Fishermen earn BAIT building the tackle index — every rod, reel and lure, catalogued by the people who actually use them. Get good at it and your entries go straight in.

Gaming it doesn't pay

Duplicates get caught, there is a daily cap, sloppy entries cost you standing, and anything later found wrong gets taken back. Every movement is on the record.

Where your margin lives

$20 a season, $60 a year for captains, top-ups, entry fees, sponsors — all settling through one balance, so a fisherman only ever learns one number. Kids are free.

08 — the front end is yours

Kala is our own fishing app — live map, verified sessions, streaks, the species list, everything — and it is just one thing built on top of this. If you want a finished app, put your name on Kala and run your first derby this month. If you already have an app your fishermen love, keep it: send us the catches and show our results in your own screens. Nobody ever sees us.
